Shabbat CHAYE SARAH in Hebron



This week’s Parasha is called CHAYE SARAH. The Torah is telling us that Avraham’s wife Sarah passed away and Avraham is hurrying to organize a burial place for her. He buys the “Ma’arat HaMachpelah – Double Cave” from the Hittite Ephron. 
The Gemara in Talmud Eruvin 53a teaches that Sarah was not the first person to be buried there. Adam HaRishon and Eve (Chava) had already found their resting place in the Machpelah. Avraham knew about this and thus decided to purchase the cave. The following couples are buried in the cave: Adam and Eve, Avraham and Sarah, Yitzchak and Rivka (Rebecca) as well as Yaakov and Leah.
